This one-hour session will review the current implementation state of the Framework Agreement across the country including recent amendments to both the agreement and its ratifying legislation the First Nations Lands Management Act (FNLMA). The presentation will provide updates on efforts to build a better understanding of surveying in communities, to build tools and processes to address boundary conflicts, and to address Indian Act related legacy land survey and boundary issues on First Nation’s lands. The presentation will answer; how to work with First Nations who have a ratified Land Code, as well as what laws and policies enacted by operational First Nations that affect surveys.

Presenters

Tania Bigstone

For the past 10 years, Tania has been a consultant for the First Nations Land Management Resource Centre.

She assists First Nations who are signatories to the Framework Agreement on First Nation Land Management, regarding survey related issues and concerns, as well as managing the survey contracts issued by the Resource Centre for surveys on First Nation’s Lands across Canada.

Tania is also a past president of the ACLS and continues to serve on a number of ACLS Committees and working groups, such as the Indigenous Relations Steering Committee, the Book Task Force and the Diversity Initiative

Steve Minnie

A graduate from the University of Toronto in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science in Survey Science. He earned his Ontario Land Surveyor licence in 1991.

Steve earned his Canada Lands Surveyor licence in 1995 and his BC Land Surveyor licence in 1998.

In 2000 he joined the Surveyor General Branch as a project surveyor working on legal surveys throughout British Columbia.

In 2006 he became the manager of the BC Regional Office and in 2016 he was appointed as the Deputy Surveyor General for western Canada.
